April 2007
It seems we're not the only ones who think that change is a good thing!
As from 2 April 2007, the UK Patent Office has changed its name to the UK Intellectual Property Office.
This new name, to be known informally as the UK-IPO, has been adopted in recognition of the fact that the title ‘Patent Office’, as it has been known for many years, did not properly reflect the range of intellectual property rights with which it is involved.

In hand with its new name, the UK-IPO will also have a new boss, as from 30 April 2007.
The new Chief Executive, replacing Ron Marchant, who has been at the helm since January 2004, will be Ian Fletcher, an experienced and senior civil servant who has previously held posts in UK Trade and Investment offices and the Department of Trade and Industry.
Ron Marchant, commenting on the appointment of his successor, said:
"Having met with Ian a few times and discussed the future of the UK Intellectual Property Office I have been impressed with his enthusiasm and his wide international perspective. I am confident he will take the Office forward on its chosen path."
