March 2009
Once again, the impressive growth of the Chinese economy and its IP activity has been reflected in recent figures released from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (‘WIPO’), in Geneva.
In 2008, after an annual increase of 11.9 percent, China became the 6th highest filing country, in terms of international (‘PCT’) patent applications, up from 7th, the previous year. In total, Chinese applicants submitted 6089 PCT applications, with a Chinese telecommunications company – Huawei Technologies – having filed the most applications, of any applicant, worldwide.
These figures again show the increasing economic and IP importance of China. At Forresters, we have been active in China for several years, with our partners making regular visits there, strengthening existing relationships, and forging new ones.
