Matt Shaw, a partner in our Birmingham office, has recently been moonlighting as a resident intellectual property expert for the Birmingham Post.
The Birmingham Post is the Midlands’ premier business newspaper, and is Birmingham’s only regional daily broadsheet. The paper was established over 150 years ago, and has become a well-loved and trusted part of city life and the region.
The Post runs a regular “Ask the Experts” feature, which provides an opportunity for readers to see questions answered by an expert in the relevant field. Advice provided through the feature assists members of the public to begin to navigate a path through sometimes complex issues without having to spend more than the price of a newspaper. Suggestions of where to turn for more detailed advice are given, when appropriate.
Having volunteered his services as an intellectual property expert in April 2009, Matt has since been a regular contributor to the feature. So far, the questions have ranged from asking for advice on protecting inventions on a budget (a particularly popular subject of late), to what to do in the event of a trade mark application being opposed by a competitor.
Reflecting on the feature, Matt said, “Ask the Experts provides a means of highlighting common concerns experienced by businesses and individuals, alike. The answers to the questions raised in this column are often relevant to an audience which extends far beyond the person posing the question”.
