I obtained a BSc and a PhD in chemistry from the University of Birmingham before joining Forresters in 2001. I specialise in prosecuting patent applications in Europe, the UK and in many other countries around the world, with particular experience of patent prosecution at the European Patent Office, including oral proceedings, as I am based in our Munich office.

My background before entering the profession was in pure physics, and professionally I am now involved mainly with patents and designs. I have become something of a generalist, and I enjoy working on a varied range of mechanical, electrical and software-related technologies. The core of my practice is the drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications in the UK and Europe, although I am also involved in obtaining patents worldwide.

My work involves preparing and filing patent and design applications in the UK and Europe; and developing and implementing filing strategies across the world. I have been actively involved in successful opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office and regularly prepare validity and infringement opinions.

A significant part of my practice now covers trade marks in the UK and overseas, protecting commercial branding, personal names, corporate identities and logos, with a particular interest in motorsport teams and drivers and the leisure/entertainment industries.

After completing my studies in engineering with German and spending periods of time working in industry and as a technical translator in Germany, I joined Forresters in 1985. I qualified as a UK and European Patent Attorney and dealt with inventions in the field of mechanical engineering and hydraulic systems before deciding to concentrate on my trade mark practice.

I joined Forresters in 2001 and became a partner in 2006. I am the resident partner at our Liverpool office.  With just under 20 years' experience in the profession and with a technical background of biochemistry, I primarily specialise in providing IP advice in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. I particularly enjoy, and am well versed in, contentious work including EPO oppositions and appeals.
