Michael Fischer

As both a European and German Patent Attorney, Michael is often involved in prosecution and oppositions at both the European Patent Office and German Patent and Trade Mark Office. He also has experience in appeal proceedings and is skilled in drafting patent applications.

One of Michael’s key achievements was to obtain a large number of standard essential patents (SEP) in the field of video and audio codecs for US and Chinese tech companies. During his time as an in-house patent counsel, he defended several high-profile patents in the field of power grids in opposition proceedings before the EPO. In 2018, Michael initiated the largest German-speaking conference in the field of computer-implemented inventions.

His background is in computer science and has been dealing with computer-implemented inventions throughout his career. He also has experience with a range of mechanical and electro-mechanical inventions.

Michael holds an M.Sc. in Computer Science from TU München and a D.E.S.U European Patent Litigation from the University of Strasbourg. He has also completed the course “Law for Patent Attorneys” at Fernuniversität in Hagen and is continuing his studies there with an LL.M. in European Intellectual Property Law, expected to be completed in 2024.

Michael’s clients are primarily large tech companies from the US, China, Japan and South Korea; however, he also works with several start-ups based in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, as well as some individual inventors.

Michael enjoys racket sports, cycling, swimming and hiking in the mountains.
